Meeting Eagle 10-28-2009

Here it is, a chance to finally have your opinions and concerns heard and hopefully addressed concerning the Hidden Gems Wilderness Proposal.  The Eagle County Commissioners are holding an "open house" in Eagle on Wednesday the 28th of October. The Open House will be held at the Eagle County Building in the Council Chambers - 500 Broadway St., Eagle, CO. on October 28 from 5-7 PM. This is a very important opportunity for us.  This may be the only chance the public gets to make comments on this proposal before it's taken to Washington DC. According to local news papers Hidden Gems still plans to submit a bill to Congress before the end of the calendar year.  We need to fill this room and make a strong statement to the commissioners, media, congressmen and senators that the we are the majority of the community, that we are not going to be silent anymore, and that we DO NOT SUPPORT this proposal.  

Hidden Gems has sent out emails asking for all their supporters to please show up and support their cause and try and make it look like the majority of people are for their proposal. We can not let this happen.  Please forward this on to all you know, post this letter on any internet forum you might frequent, tell your family and friends, please get the word out any way you can.

At the meeting please ask any questions you might have. Ask hard, informed questions and don't settle for "non answers" or attempts to dodge your questions.  Go to their website whiteriverwild.org refer to their maps and comments.  Use their information to offer questions.  If they dodge the answer, answer the question for them, based on their own information.   Tell your stories of why these lands are precious to you and how a Wilderness Designation will severely restrict the ways you experience the forest and other public lands.  The one thing we ask is for people to try and be accurate with any information or in any statements you might make.  If you have any questions on statistics or facts please contact us.  More than anything, we ask you to please attend if you can and please get the word out!

Meeting 9-9-09 Carbondale Town Hall

There is a meeting Wednesday September 9, at the Carbondale Town Hall, to discuss the Hidden Gems Wilderness proposal to the parks and rec dept. I think it is important that as many people as possible attend this meeting to show that there is opposition!

The meeting is at 7:00 pm, Carbondale Town Hall, and is in room #2.

The Crystal River Caucus Annual Meeting

Thursday, October 8, at 7:00 PM at the Church at Redstone.

Please plan to attend this very important meeting of your caucus. The agenda will
include:

  1. Adoption of proposed bylaw changes introduced at the 8/13/09 Caucus Meeting
  2. Election of Directors and Officers
  3. Presentation by Lisa Moreno, Wilderness Workshop, on the Hidden Gems
    Campaign

Attached are the minutes from the 8/13/09 Caucus meeting, and the proposed changes to the Crystal River Caucus bylaws.

Also save another date: A public meeting on the Watershed Plan will be held by the Roaring Fork Conservancy and the Reudi Water and Power Authority on Thursday, September 10, at 6:30 at the Church at Redstone. This will be one of the best opportunities for you to learn about the watershed plan and comment on what you think are the most important issues that the plan should address.

The White River Forest Alliance would like to extend a thank you to everyone
who attended the public dialog and forum held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Dos
Gringos in Carbondale. Thanks also to Nelson Oldham and the staff of Dos
Gringos who graciously kept the place open late for this forum.

More than 100 wilderness advocates were present, representing a wide
spectrum of user groups, including ranchers, the disabled community,
mountain bikers, dirt-bike riders, hikers, snowmobilers, 4-wheel drivers,
and cross- and backcountry skiers. The forum primarily focused on what is
the true definition of Wilderness, what it means to us as a community and
how we can better work together and develop protocols to preserve our wild
lands while still being able to continue to utilize them.

Scott Fitzwilliams of the White River National Forest and Perry Will from
the Colorado Department of Wildlife were on hand to answer questions
pertaining to their specific organizations. Fitzwilliams spoke directly of
how we can all help augment the staff of the White River National Forest in
maintaining our public lands and educated us as to the process of the WRNF
Travel Management Plan. Will explained in detail the effect of what might
happen to funding for and care of wildlife in the event of blanket closures
of wilderness lands to Wilderness designation.

The White River Forest Alliance is a purely volunteer, Wilderness advocacy
group representing the multiuser in working for protection of our public
wild lands. The goal of the White River Forest Alliance is to create
awareness through education that alternative ways of protecting public lands
exist while still maintaining access and encouraging individuals to take
personal responsibility in gaining a better understanding of and
collaboration between user groups. We encourage the community to become
educated as to what Wilderness means and the processes of what constitutes
Wilderness designation.
